OpenTelemetry tracing for ASP.NET Web API 2 on .NET Framework 4.7.2+: one span per ApiController action (Controller.Action), child of the HTTP span, with route, method, status code and primitive parameters.

  • IIS / IIS Express hosting: automatic, the filter is added to GlobalConfiguration.Configuration before Application_Start.
  • OWIN self-host: config.AddNetAmpoweringTracing(); (idempotent), then start OpenTelemetry with AspNetTelemetry.Start().

Disable parameter capture: WebApiObservability.Options.CaptureActionParameters = false;. Errors are recorded without any SQL parameter value (see ActivityErrorExtensions.RecordError). Configuration (OpenTelemetry:* in appSettings, httpRuntime targetFramework="4.7.2", netstandard assembly) is the same as for NetAmpowering.AspNet.
